Although surgery was recommended for my scoliosis, the specialist advised that pilates might be beneficial. I had no experience with pilates, but was motivated to try it as a non-surgical option due to years of suffering mechanical back pain, chronic muscle spasm, worsened by a 60 degree thoracolumbar scoliosis which was exacerbated by activities such as housework and leisure activities such as sitting in church or a movie, and prolonged standing at a concert or athletic event. Cindy carefully assessed my condition and created an individualized program for my needs. After the first session, my pain had decreased and after one month, my daily pain scores were decreased by 50%. Three months of the dedicated attention by Cindy, changed my life such that I did not awaken with severe pain each morning; I no longer had a sense of dread about activities that worsened my back pain, and I was able to participate in more activities. My family noticed a significant difference in my attitude and mood and my Scoliosis Survey, a measurement of pain and function, revealed a dramatic improvement. Although initially I was skeptical of pilates and concerned about the time and financial commitment, what I received in return was well worth the investment with a life changing impact. Cindy's excellent technical skills, compassion, and dedicated research are an East Texas treasure, and I would highly recommend Pure Pilates to others with scoliosis.
